One of our absolute favorite places to go when we lived in Washington state! Lime Kiln State Park on San Juan Island. Having grown up on the East Coast, our family would go on vacation to ironically, where we live now, Florida. One of the places I always loved best, even more than the Magic Kingdom, was Sea World. My parents would have to drag me away from the dolphin pool. I also loved seeing the orcas, how beautiful they were. I could stay there all day just watching them. Our first visit to Lime Kiln park we saw… wild orcas!! They came right up to the rocks we were standing on and swam by. It was one of the most magical moments of my and my husband’s life. One of them sort of turned over on their side leisurely and we saw this big eye just looking at us as it swam by. Yes, it may have been looking at us like we could be yummy fish haha But we like to think it was just curious about these strange creatures standing on the rocks.
If you plan on going, try to go during the summer months as that’s when the resident orcas are all around catching salmon. Their numbers are currently low and orca birthrates are going down sadly. The whales are one of the things we miss very much. For more information on them be sure to visit the Center for Whale Research website. There’s sooo much more to these creatures than I ever knew. We kayaked once in the area and I wasn’t sure if I wanted them to swim near us or not. They are huge!! It would have been thrilling for sure 😃
